The Bucks needed nearly every second of their opener, and they made it count. CB West’s Middle School Triple A team opened its Suburban High School Hockey League season with a 4-3 win over CB South on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Hatfield Ice, and Nick Montagna scored the game-winner with just 47 seconds left on the clock.

Montagna was in on three of the four Bucks goals, finishing with two goals and an assist. Austin Schleinkofer made 20 saves on 23 shots in net, and the Bucks outshot the Titans 33-23. It was a night of firsts, too: Adam Makleev, Lorenzo Troilo and Montagna all scored their first goals of the season, and Cory Griffin and David Kemmerer picked up their first points.

First period

South struck first, early in the period. The Bucks answered right around the midpoint, when Makleev tied it 1-1 with 8:11 left, set up by Montagna.

Second period

West took control with two goals just 40 seconds apart. Troilo put the Bucks in front 2-1 with 5:04 left, from Griffin, and Montagna followed with 4:24 left to make it 3-1, from Kemmerer. The Titans got one back with 3:41 to go in the period, and it was 3-2 heading into the third.

Third period

South pulled even at 3-3 about five minutes into the third, setting up a tense finish. The Bucks kept coming, and with 47 seconds left, Montagna buried the winner on his own, unassisted, for a 4-3 lead that held up. West scored in every period and erased an early deficit to get the win.

Standings and stakes

At 1-0-0, CB West is one of four unbeaten teams in the SHSHL Middle School Triple A division after opening weekend. With four teams sitting on a win apiece, the Bucks are fourth in the standings on the goal differential tiebreaker, so every goal matters in a race this tight.

Next up

The Bucks are back on the ice next Sunday, Oct. 25, at 6:25 PM, hosting Neshaminy (0-1) at Hatfield Ice on the Blue rink.

Come out and see your Bucks go for two in a row. Let’s go West!
